Why Your AI Readiness Audit Should Be Industry-Specific

Industry-specific findings vs. generic recommendations — the difference between fixing what actually matters and fixing what looks like it matters estimated revenue at risk
A generic digital audit misses the industry-specific signals that determine AI visibility for professional service firms, healthcare practices, contractors, and other verticals. Here is why industry context changes everything.

A licensed clinical social worker in Boston received a generic SEO audit from a marketing tool she had subscribed to. The report flagged her website as having a low domain authority, recommended building more backlinks, and suggested she write more blog posts on trending topics.

None of these were the actual problem.

Her actual problems — which a generic audit couldn't surface because it had no context for her industry — were: her Psychology Today listing didn't include the insurance panels she now accepted; her NASW directory listing used a former business address; her GBP category was set to "Therapist" rather than "Mental Health Service" which is the category that triggers in AI platform recommendations; and her website contained no FAQ content addressing the specific questions her prospective clients were asking AI chatbots before calling.

A generic audit told her what was technically wrong according to a standard rubric. An industry-specific audit would have told her what was actually costing her clients.

Why Industry Context Changes What You Look For

The five dimensions of an AI readiness audit — AI platform testing, schema markup, NAP consistency, content citability, and trust signals — apply across all industries. The weight of each dimension and the specific signals within each dimension vary significantly based on industry.

A medical spa operates in an industry where proximity and visual proof are the primary discovery triggers. A CPA firm operates in one where credential signals and professional directory listings carry outsized weight. A real estate agent operates in one where response speed is the primary conversion variable after initial visibility. A therapist operates in one where privacy considerations affect review behavior, specialty-specific directories carry more authority than general directories, and insurance and licensure information is a primary trust signal.

A generic audit applies the same rubric to all of them. An industry-tailored audit weights the signals that matter most for the specific discovery path of the specific industry.

FINDING 01

Professional Services: Credential Signals Carry Disproportionate Weight

For attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors, therapists, and other licensed professionals, AI systems place disproportionate weight on credential signals when building recommendation confidence. Professional association membership directories — ABA, AICPA, AASECT, NASW, NAPFA — are among the highest-authority sources AI systems use to validate expertise. State licensing board directories are a primary source for confirming credentials. The Princeton GEO study found that expert credentials and citations boost AI visibility by up to 41%. A professional services practitioner with inconsistent or missing credential signals in these directories is invisible to AI in ways that a contractor or restaurant with the same overall visibility score is not.

FINDING 02

Local Service Businesses: GBP And Proximity Signals Are The Primary Driver

For contractors, HVAC companies, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and similar service businesses, the primary AI discovery path runs through Google Business Profile, local directories, and proximity signals. ChatGPT pulls over 70% of its local business data from Foursquare. A service business that has optimized their GBP but not their Foursquare listing is systematically under-represented in AI-driven local recommendations. The industry-specific audit for service businesses weights Foursquare, Apple Maps, and the local data aggregator consistency more heavily than the general audit framework would suggest.

FINDING 03

Healthcare And Wellness: Specialty Directories And Privacy-affected Review Patterns

Healthcare providers — physicians, therapists, dentists, med spas, physical therapists — operate in an industry where review behavior is affected by privacy considerations. Patients are often reluctant to leave reviews that identify their provider, which means healthcare practitioners typically have lower review volume than service businesses with comparable client loads. AI systems processing a therapist with 14 Google reviews and a contractor with 340 reviews apply different baselines. The healthcare-specific audit evaluates specialty directories (Psychology Today, Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, WebMD doctor profiles), insurance panel inclusion signals, and the specific schema types (MedicalOrganization, Physician) that provide the highest citation value for healthcare providers.

FINDING 04

Real Estate: Response Speed And Platform Presence As Primary Variables

The real estate industry has a specific dynamic that generic audits miss: 78% of leads go to the first agent who responds, and agents responding within 5 minutes are 21× more likely to qualify a lead than those responding within 30 minutes. An AI readiness audit for a real estate agent that doesn't evaluate after-hours lead capture, automated response infrastructure, and Zillow and Realtor.com profile completeness — in addition to standard visibility signals — is missing the variables that most directly determine revenue. The industry-tailored audit weights these factors correctly.

FINDING 05

Personal Brand Professionals: Original Content And Entity Specificity Are Critical

Coaches, consultants, speakers, authors, and other professionals whose personal brand is the primary product face a specific AI challenge: AI systems often conflate personal brands with their most famous adjacencies. A leadership coach who has written about Brené Brown gets cited as "similar to Brené Brown" rather than as an expert in their own right. A consultant in the same city as a more prominent consultant in the same specialty gets confused with them. The personal brand audit weights entity specificity signals — Person schema, sameAs links, consistent name formatting across all platforms, and original citable content that AI systems can attribute specifically to the individual — more heavily than the general framework suggests.

What Industry-Tailored Looks Like in Practice

For every industry, the same five audit dimensions apply — but the specific findings, benchmarks, and prioritization differ:

Professional Services (attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors): Primary focus: Credential directory presence and schema, professional association listings, AI citation accuracy for specialty.

Healthcare and Wellness (physicians, therapists, dentists, med spas): Primary focus: Specialty directory profiles, healthcare schema types, insurance and credentialing signals, privacy-aware review strategy.

Local Service Businesses (contractors, HVAC, plumbing, home services): Primary focus: GBP optimization, Foursquare and Apple Maps presence, after-hours call capture, local data aggregator consistency.

Real Estate: Primary focus: Portal profiles, response infrastructure, lead capture systems, local market area entity signals.

Personal Brand Professionals (coaches, consultants, speakers, authors): Primary focus: Person schema, entity disambiguation, original citable content, sameAs link structure, name consistency.
