Why Doesn't My Business Show Up on ChatGPT?
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI "who is the best [your service] in [your city]" — what happens?
For most businesses, nothing. They don't appear. Not because they're bad at what they do. Because their digital infrastructure gives AI systems nothing to work with.
What AI Search Actually Looks For
AI engines don't return ten blue links. They return one confident answer.
To give that answer, they need to verify a business exists, is legitimate, and is relevant to the query. They do this by checking:
- Is there an owned website with structured data markup?
- Is the Google Business Profile claimed and consistent?
- Does the business name appear the same way across all platforms?
- Is there original content the AI can cite as a source?
- Do other authoritative sources mention this business?
If any of these are missing — and for most local businesses, most of them are — the AI skips the business entirely and recommends a competitor who has them.
What We Find In Audits
In a recent audit of a multi-location healthcare group in New York, we found the business did not appear in a single AI-generated response across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview — despite serving 140+ locations and holding thousands of patient reviews. The reason: no schema markup, no claimed Google Business Profile, and inconsistent NAP data across directories. AI systems had no confident signal to work with.
The Five Reasons Businesses Are Invisible to AI
No owned website or schema markup
AI agents need a structured data source to cite. A website with LocalBusiness schema tells AI exactly what the business does, where it operates, and how to contact it. Without schema, the AI has to guess — and it defaults to businesses that have it.
Unclaimed or inconsistent Google Business Profile
Google AI Overviews pull heavily from GBP data. An unclaimed profile means the AI can't verify the business is active. Inconsistent NAP data (different name or phone number across platforms) signals low confidence. Low confidence = no mention.
Name confusion in search
If a business name matches multiple unrelated companies, AI systems cannot confidently attribute information to the right one. The result: the AI ignores all of them and recommends a business with an unambiguous identity.
No original content to cite
AI systems preferentially cite content that directly answers the question being asked. A business with no blog, no FAQ page, and no original written content gives the AI nothing to quote. A competitor with three well-structured blog posts answering the same question gets cited instead.
Not mentioned in authoritative sources
Wikipedia entries, industry directories, press coverage, and third-party citations all increase AI confidence in a business. A business with zero press mentions and no third-party validation is invisible to AI regardless of how good the product is.
What This Actually Costs
The Real Number
AI-referred traffic has increased 600% since January 2025. ChatGPT now has 900 million weekly active users. Perplexity processed 780 million queries in May 2025 alone. Every one of those queries is a potential customer asking for a recommendation. A business invisible to AI is invisible to all of them.

The compound effect: Each of these actions makes AI systems more confident about your business. Confidence compounds. Within 90 days of implementing all five, most businesses begin appearing in AI-generated recommendations for their core service queries.
